Woman with sled in winter

Winter Warrior

Don't let the cold rob you of fun and exercise.

Steer clear of injuries. Search for “sledding tips” from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons at aaos.org.

You’ve winterized your home and car to get ready for the cold weather, but are you and your family really prepared for a winter lifestyle? Don’t let cold weather turn you into a couch potato. Working out helps fight the winter blues and holiday weight gain. Check out these winter activities.

Snow Sports Get into the spirit of the season with ice skating, skiing, sledding or even a good old snowball fight.

Indoor Fun If you prefer to stay warm, join a gym or take an indoor class. Play a team sport like volleyball or basketball, or take a new class in kickboxing, dance or Pilates.

Living Room Games Some new video games such as Wii® Sports or Dance Dance Revolution® will keep you and your kids moving.

Nurture Nature Hang a bird feeder near a window and watch for feathered visitors. Enjoy the fresh air and exercise of refilling the feeder.

In addition to being physically active, stay mentally upbeat. In some cases, feeling sad may be more than just the winter blues. Those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) experience depression, lethargy and fatigue during the winter. Doctors can treat SAD using light therapy to relieve depression.

To avoid weight gain over the holidays, adopt healthy eating strategies. Don’t set unrealistic goals: focus on maintaining your weight instead of trying to lose weight during the holidays. Eat a light snack before holiday parties so that you can resist richer foods. Be aware of your food choices and avoid high calorie drinks. Finally, be sure to reduce the fat content in holiday recipes.

With a healthy plan in place, you and your family can enjoy the winter season.
