Diet, Herbs and Prostate Cancer
It's worth considering eliminating or adding certain foods and herbs to your diet to lower your risk for prostate cancer.
Cruciferous vegetables — Broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts help enzymes in the digestive tract break down cancer-causing substances.
Soy Protein — Proven to alter the production and metabolism of male hormones and estrogen.
Tomatoes — Help prevent damage to the prostate because they contain lycopene, a powerful anti-oxidant. Oxidant damage has been linked directly to many chronic diseases and cancers.
Flax Seed/olive oil — Research at Duke University on men diagnosed with prostate cancer found that flax seed directly inhibited the growth of cancer cells. Flax seed, as well as fish oil and olive oil, contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are superb as cancer inhibitors.
Green Tea — Research in Asia and elsewhere found that regular consumption of green tea inhibits cancer cell growth.
Saw Palmetto/Stinging nettle — Used extensively in Europe, both are effective at treating early BPH (benign enlargement of the prostate). These work as well as two common medications used to treat BPH, finasteride (Proscar) and terazosin (Hytrin), and have fewer side effects.
Eliminate high-fat meats and dairy products because these increase prostate cancer risk. Also, be wary of vitamin supplements. The most recent prevention trial showed vitamin E and selenium did not protect against prostate or other cancers. Finally, be wary of zinc, which in low doses appears to be protective,
but at high doses (100mg daily) may actually increase the risk of prostate cancer.
