Within the John K. Pruellage Heart & Vascular Center is a place of peace and relaxation for patients and their families known as the “healing garden.” The garden is a peaceful place where people can go when they need a few minutes to themselves.
The elliptical garden is surrounded by glass on three sides and exposed to the outdoors from above. It exemplifies a biophilic design, which incorporates elements of nature. Hospital studies have shown that patients heal faster when exposed to natural elements.
Beautiful in all seasons, garden plants include weeping cherry trees, European birches, purple-leafed Japanese maples, birds’ nest spruces, boxwood, Korean spice viburnums and liriope. Perennial plantings are interspersed with spring tulips, summer annuals and fall mums, all accented by low-voltage lighting. The plantings surround a stone walkway that leads to a patio area, with benches nestled behind six freestanding water features. A center planter with a tall, dense row of bamboo serves as a privacy screen.
Visible from every floor, the garden theme extends to artwork with inspirational and biblical quotes throughout the tower. Etched glass features herald the four seasons, and indoor seating in each lobby offers attractive views through the garden’s windows.
